The Hilltop Economic Development Corp.

A variety of community revitalization plans are underway at the Hilltop EDC. The coming year should see significant action as these plans get underway. The annual meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Elder-ado building in the 300 block Brownsville Road. Everyone interested in revitalization is invited!

COMMUNITY MAP NOW UNDERWAY -- GET ABOARD!

The Hilltop EDC is now assembling a community map. This map will be outlined with local business advertisements. Cost of such an ad is $150. For this, the advertiser gets a business-card sized ad on the border of the map. Over 5,000 maps will be printed. They will be given to all local residents and businesses.

Business taking part in this project will receive a letter verifying their donation for tax purposes. Along with the ad, participating businesses will receive a one-year membership in the Hilltop eDC and will be listed on our web site, as well as in our next printing of our brochure.

Sara Kudasick, a board member of the Hilltop Economic Development Corp., has presented a request for ten to 15 street trees in Knoxville to Treevitalize Pittsburgh, an organization interested in helping Pittsburgh's "urban forest" thrive and survive. A response to the request is expected in January.

Kudasick reported she has talked with Treevitalize Pittsburgh's director and with Pittsburgh's Urban Forester about the project. The trees will be planted in the Knoxville portion of Brownsville Road, which would mean from the Mt. Oliver clock tower to the Italian Club in Carrick. Carrick is also getting trees from Treevitalize which will meet the Knoxville plantings, according to present plans.

The variety of trees will be decided by Pittsburgh's Urban Forester, Kudasick said. The idea is to select trees suitable for each location, in size, hardiness and growth habits. She added that these will not be the only trees available to Knoxville. Treevitalize Pittsburgh may contribute trees for residential streets as well.

The Economic Development Corp. has suspended its regular November meeting (which would have occurred on Thanksgiving) and will meet, instead, December 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Elderado building in the 300 block of Brownsville Road.
